Christopher Columbus was the 2nd European Shipmaster to land on the shores of the New World... almost 500 years, after Leif Eriksen.
Then, for two centuries, came other explorers who left their names to many places:
– First of all, of course, is Amerigo Vespucci whose first name was given to the New Continent (America!)
– Then, Verrazano who left his name to a bridge of NYC
– And also Giovanni Cabotto... John Cabot for the King of England, Jean Cabot for the King of France...
Their common point is that they sailed for the kings of Spain, France or England... but never for "Italy" because Italy was not a Kingdom but it was divided in powerful cities-republics like Genoa or Venice, and... puny tiny kingdoms.
MASSIVE ITALIAN IMMIGRATION
It was not before late 19th Century that massive Italian immigration started further to the economical situation of the new re-unified Kingdom of Italy.

Although it was "late", considering that the Italian explorers took a major part in the early exploration of the New World, this immigration gave to America major artists recognized worldwide.
